What happens next, her journey into parenthood but also the adjustment of dreams she held her entire life, is a fantastic story.
I think part of what I enjoyed so much about this book is the nature of Heawood's job. In the short time I spent as a reporter, I loved talking to people, learning what they had to teach me about life, and seeing who they really were behind whatever public persona they were projecting.
Heawood had the opportunity to interview Hollywood A-listers and she gives you an inside view of what that was like.
In addition to the peek behind the curtain into the mystical world of Hollywood fame, Heawood doesn't shy away from faithfully recording the sometimes harsh reality of becoming a parent.
Told that I am not doing it right, that there are rules. When I do get home, it only takes me a couple of weeks to recover from the surgery, but it takes me about a year to recover from the few days in the hospital when I was supposed to be recovering, and to regain the caring instincts to protect this tiny creature, the ones that were crushed before they had even dared to begin.
Heawood has trouble finding housing as a single mother and going to prenatal classes alone. In this life transition that can be difficult at the best of times, she faces it on her own.
But her attitude is not woe-is-me. Heawood keeps the positive and empowered spin up throughout most of her challenges and, when she can't manage it, she still appreciates the gift she has been given through her relationship with her daughter.
I enjoyed this memoir very much and read it in about two sittings. Recommended for readers who enjoy humorous memoirs about parenthood, Hollywood, dating, night-clubbing and the inevitable spiritual evolution that comes from finding the place in life that you were always meant to be.

I requested it because it was billed as funny, which it is--to the point where I laughed out loud multiple times and I rarely find books tagged humorous to be that funny -- but it's also a deeply heartfelt and honest book about being a parent.
The author, Sophie Heawood, became pregnant after being told she was infertile while working as a freelance journalist for British publications in L.
She paints a very accurate and very funny portrait of L. Heawood's insights into parenting are savagely honest, deeply true, and written with a mix of love and snark.
I came away from The Hungover Games very impressed with her writing, her love for her daughter, and her ability to make even the grimmest of moments gleam with humor and hope.
Absolutely recommended, especially for those who remember the first and frankly, best book to feature Bridget Jones, as well as Fleabag fans.
Oct 13, Kirsten rated it really liked it. This was an enjoyable and very relatable read that I finished in a single sitting.
Jul 17, Ciera rated it really liked it. Right never showed up for Sophie Heawood, so instead, she has a baby with Mr.
I found myself laughing along with Sophie at her darkest moments, which she somehow makes comical, and her highest. May 17, Gail O'Connor rated it it was ok.
The Hungover Games about a single pregnant woman had an easy style of writing but it just couldn't keep my interest. I just needed a faster paced story.
Aug 16, Maureen rated it it was amazing. It's funny how you can have common ground with someone you never have met how your lives can uncannily parallel each other in the name of motherhood.
Sophie Heawood had a relationship that went caput early in her pregnancy she was abandoned by her musician boyfriend. Who found another woman to spend time with.

Couch surfing at 6 mos pregnant is no picnic in the park but Sophie resiliently pushes through and has a daughter and discovers how to be a family of two when she was part of a nuclear family growing up.
And her friends are married with children so it proves to be a challenge to go and be an award winning columnist and a single mother and have a good solid support system Five stars from me.

What follows are reflections about pregnancy and motherhood with some definite laugh out loud moments.
Ultimately, while I wanted to really like it, I found it a little boring. Each chapter is its own short vignette and as it often goes, some were more entertaining than others.
And despite the title being fun, it doesn't match the story. Overall a sweet story that I think mothers may appreciate more than I did.

This was a been there, read that kind of a story for me just the names have changed and this nonfiction. There have been an enormous amount of fiction books with stories like this.
I can sympathize with the hardships and having to grow up even though I haven't experienced it firsthand. This book just was not for me even though the writing was good.

I loved it. Jun 08, Jeffrey Chassen rated it really liked it. This book lived up to its description fully. It is filled to the brim with the self-deprecating, goofy but lovable leading lady that only a British woman such as those featured in Bridget Jones or Fleabag can deliver.
There were some major laugh out loud moments - the fart chapter was probably my favorite, followed by her brush with a famous terrorist's niece.
It's a very fun read. Perfect for the beach, or a night in with a glass of wine. Aug 10, Abby Green rated it it was amazing. Adored this. It's laugh out loud funny and unbearably poignant all in the same moment.
As the daughter of a single parent Mother I could relate to so much. Highly recommend. Ten stars! Jul 07, Caroline rated it liked it. Rest assured, this book is not another cheesy fanfic.
What came next after falling pregnant in a foreign country? What would happen to her coveted job placement in LA?
And how would she cope with the daunting reality of single motherhood? Told as a series of memories, we hear some of the sudden, raw, and occasionally laugh-out-loud realities of pregnancy and solo-parenting.
However, when it came to the writing, the book struggled to keep my attention. I probably wouldn't recommend this one unless you are a single parent or are very close to one.
We, the reader, are then taken through many a tale about her pregnancy experience and steaming messy life. However, I did find myself skipping pages to avoid the excessively long tangents that were there for the laugh but fell flat because it kept straying off topic a lot.
If we could go on holiday, it would be the perfect holiday read. May 10, Donna Boyd rated it really liked it. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a digital copy of this book prior to publication in exchange for my honest review.
She has an instagram account that is laugh out loud funny and I am glad she finally wrote a book. This is a true story about her "accidentally" getting pregnant and becoming a mother in her mid-thirtes.

In Part I, Heawood is a journalist living in America, writing celebrity and entertainment pieces for newspapers and magazines in England. She is living the good life, going to parties, staying out late drinking and just having fun and then she finds out she is pregnant.
She is mortified and overwhelmed when friends throw her a baby shower-it is not done in England-but during the shower she realizes that these people are part of her village and they would be there to help her raise her child if she stays in America.
Part Two finds Sophie back in London to be with baby daddy, still pregnant but musician baby daddy moves on to France where he finds someone else. She manages to get a job, rent a house, acquire furniture and move forward towards becoming a person who has a baby.
Before the story ends, Sophie not only has a baby, she is succeeding and she is doing a great job of raising a daughter, but not before she goes through some trying times.
It is a funny, honest, sometimes disturbing book that will teach you what it means to be a single mother trying to find the balance between motherhood and being true to yourself.
She became pregnant unexpectedly after one of her hook-ups and found herself single, pregnant and broke. Sophie Heawood talks through the highs and lows of being pregnant and a new mother in the modern world, with her brutally honest comedy shining through each story.
Being 24 and without children, there were moments in her story that was solely about her experience of pregnancy and early motherhood and I struggled to relate to what she was talking about.
Yet there are definitely some lessons I can take and which are good to know for when I am a mother. I really enjoyed the little insights into the interviews she was having with extremely famous celebrities and her humour was absolutely fantastic.
There were multiple times when I was genuinely creasing at her stories. One thing for certain is that her daughter is going to have such an amazing and fun life.
She is going to grow up resilient and strong just like her mother. Oct 07, Sharon rated it really liked it Shelves: giveaways. Zach becomes separated from Ed and Bradley. The two flee and spend the night in a tree to sleep but witness the careers murder two other tributes.
They see Zach with the Careers and realize that Zach has allied with them to help them find and kill Ed and Bradley.
In the morning Bradley is urged by another tribute, Little Boo, to drop a hive of "Swaggerjacks" wasps onto the careers sleeping below them.
In the process Bradley and Ed are stung several times and the hallucinogenic venom causes them to pass out. They awaken and find Zach has nursed them back to health and they go search for Doug again.
Zach reveals that the reason they are in the Hungover Games is because the previous night he plugged in air-fresheners that were "midnight berry" scented and that the scent of the poisonous berries drugged them.
He also reveals that the air-fresheners "may cause transportation to futuristic dystopia. He is ambushed by the careers but is saved by Katnip and Boo, who kill Gratuitous Nudity, though the female Avatar is also murdered.
Meanwhile, Ed and Bradley decide to reunite with Zach after a rule change that states that four men who share a "bromance" can all win together.
Before she can say, she is killed by Thor, who is murdered by Ed in retaliation. After a short funeral for Boo, Katnip decides to leave on her own to kill Tonto.
The three decide to head back to the Pornucopia after an announcement that something everyone is looking for is located there. Assuming it is Doug, the three rush to the Pornucopia but are attacked by Carrie.
Zach murders Carrie in a rage. Ted and the other two puppets attack the three but Zach is able to blow up two of them using his Hunger Games's book and Katnip returns and saves Ed from Ted.
She reveals she was mortally wounded in her fight with Tonto and dies with Ed beside her. The three find out that their prize at the Pornucopia is a cell phone, and not Doug, and they realize they will never find him so they call Tracey to inform him of the situation.
However, after a short conversation with Zach, Ed realizes where Doug is and stops Bradley from making the call. Ed explains that Doug's tube never came up because Zach's bubble tea short-circuited the tube that sends up tributes.
After looking in his tube they see that Doug isn't there, but he emerges from the forest, camouflaged, and attacks them, berating them about how they always forget him and how he is almost never in the movies.
The three tell him they will never forget him again and that he will have more lines in the next film, and he decides to spare them. Another rule change states that there can only be one victor and the four turn on each other.
Zach proposes they all eat poisonous berries, as the creators of the games would never let them all die as they would rather have four victors than none, and so would interrupt the four before they can eat the poison.
Zach's plan fails after they eat the berries and die with no one stopping them. They wake up in their hotel room, realizing it was just a shared dream.
The four go to the wedding where Ed laments about Katnip but runs into an identical looking girl who seems to be attracted to him.
